What are the benefits of training for and participating in Challenge Events?

  • Development of great teamwork that bonds people into high performing teams
  • Huge enjoyment and personal reward for individuals, aiding employee engagement and development
  • Memorable, even life changing experience for participants
  • Many hidden strengths in individuals and teams are uncovered - developing latent capabilities, competencies and confidence
  • An effective network of participants within an organisation is created
  • Great PR for the organisation - and extensive TV coverage
  • Raising money for a charity which will aid with an organisation's corporate social responsibility

Why train for the events?

Individuals, teams and their organisations get a great deal more from the whole ‘Challenger’ experience by preparing and training well for the event.

Teams have time to acquire and develop the necessary performance levels, which fall into four categories:

  • Teamwork
  • Technical skills
  • Fitness
  • Practice

Quest has developed a comprehensive programme of training geared to all levels of teams and individuals entering challenge events.

Tell me more about these four types of performance requirements and how Quest can help

a. Team performance
Top performing teams are well attuned teams who have reached the real "performing" stage of Tuckman's team model elements: “forming, storming, norming and then performing. This happens by a combination of the following:

  • Correct selection of complimentary individuals
  • Getting to know and trust others within a team
  • Defining clear objectives and goals for team & individuals
  • Motivation to achieve
  • Clear and concise communication
  • Great team dynamics
  • Excellent execution and delivery of results

Quest’s training majors on these team performance areas through providing practical experience and encouraging feedback within and to teams.

Skills learned and practiced while training for and competing in corporate competitions enable individuals and teams to return to the office with greater confidence, capability and commitment.

b. Technical performance
Quest provides a comprehensive range of skills training which includes:

  • Personal preparation and organisation for the outdoors including the right clothing, kit, diet and countryside awareness
  • Moving over (progressing to running over) difficult terrain and in varying conditions
  • Micro navigation at day and night including effective use of a compass
  • Route choice and accurate assessment of time:distance equations
  • Creating a winning strategy for a stage from various options and reviewing execution of this mid and post stage
  • Mountain biking including necessary maintenance and en-route repairs
  • Canoeing, kayaking and other water based activities
  • Construction tasks and exercises in physical dexterity
  • Puzzles and mental alertness, expanding breadth and depth of view and interpretation
  • Quickly assimilating information and making trade off decisions

c. Fitness performance
A range of assessment and performance improvement regimes are provided. These enable individuals and teams to acquire the necessary levels of fitness to enjoy challenge events and exceed personal fitness goals.

d. Practice performance
By providing many opportunities to practice new skills, and to test teamwork and fitness Quest training reinforces learning and boosts performance. Activities and full Challenge stages are created that mirror the types of stages experienced in actual competition. Practicing hard alongside other teams acclimatises teams to the real sense of competition.

Why undertake Challenge Training with Quest?

  • Quest personnel have taken part in every CW UK Challenge since 1993 and have an unrivalled experience and passion for CW events.
  • Quest have trained teams with all levels of previous experience and ambition including overall winning teams. In 2004 for instance four of the top eight teams who qualified for the inaugural World Team Challenge via the Microsoft UK Challenge were trained by Quest.
  • Quest personnel include members of past Microsoft UK Challenge (MUKC) winning teams who are also active in a range of outdoor activities and other competitive events.
  • Quest training is intensive and practical. It will combine all the four key performance areas. Therefore during a Quest challenge training weekend participants will have improved their fitness, team and technical performance by undertaking and practicing a range of fun, challenging and highly rewarding activities.

What type of training is available from Quest and when?

The training programme is modular and progressive building performance over the preparation period.

The earlier teams start to train the more they will enjoy the event, get more from the whole Challenger experience and perform better. The chart below shows how the the programme builds from November through to the May and how the various elements of training develop. Different organisations choose all or some of these training events from the overall programme.

The following chart displays the training opportunities with Quest by month and the underlying colour diagram represents the four elements of training: Technical Skills, Teamwork, Practice and Fitness and how much emphasis on each you will experience through the course of your training.
